Khal at The Auricle Sonic Arts Gallery

8 October – 31 October 2015

The Auricle Sonic Arts Gallery presented the fourth iteration of Helga Fassonaki’s ongoing project Khal, which she began in Tabriz, Iran in September 2014. Fassonaki had sent sixteen sculptural scores she made in Iran abroad for sixteen female artists to interpret and perform publicly in response to the post-revolution ban on female solo performances.  The original scores and recorded interpretations by the participating artists were exhibited at The Auricle gallery, part of a traveling exhibition where each iteration includes recordings and artifacts from the exhibition before as well as live performances of the scores by new artists.

Five local artists were chosen to perform Fassonaki’s scores live on October 9th:
Stainer Black-Five (Jo Burzynska) One Two Sides Dirty
Mela (Helen Greenfield) –  Remove
Misfit Mod (Sarah Kelleher) Hair Porn
French Concession (Ella) Heavy Light
Instant Fantasy (Gemma Syme) One Song Two Sides Bold Breathing
